Truckee River - Lake Tahoe Fishing

Fish the deep pools during the early part of the season.  Best bets are to fish the section of the river between Tahoe City and the River Ranch.  Use powerbait, salmon eggs, and worms.  The Department of Fish and Game stocks this section of the river during the spring.  The Wild Trout section is restricted to artificial lures or flies and is located below the town of Truckee from Trout Creek to the Boca Bridge.  Access to this river is easy since it follows California Highway 89 and Interstate 80 along its entire length.  Note that no fishing is allowed in the first 1000' below Lake Tahoe outlet.

Driving directions from TahoeTarns at Zephyr Cove: Take the 1st RIGHT onto US-50 E. go 8.9 mi Turn LEFT onto NV-28 (Crossing into CALIFORNIA).  NV-28 is 0.3 miles past GENOA PEAK RD go 16.2 mi NV-28 becomes CA-28 / N LAKE BLVD. go 11.0 mi CA-28 / N LAKE BLVD becomes CA-89 / W RIVER RD. go 0.1 mi Start out going NORTH on CA-89 / W RIVER RD toward TWIN CRAGS. Continue to follow CA-89 N. go 13.4 mi Enter next roundabout and take 1st exit. go 0.2 mi Stay STRAIGHT to go onto I-80 E / CA-89 N. Continue to follow I-80 E. go 18.5 mi Here is where I-80 E. parallels the Truckee Rover, where good fishing can be found. Total Travel Estimate:  68.3 miles - about 1 hour and 29 minutes.
